Gold Karats Explained

Pure gold is 24 karat — but pure gold is soft, so for jewelry it's mixed with other metals for strength. The karat number tells you how much of the piece is pure gold.

  • 10K — 41.7% pure gold. The most durable and most affordable option; popular for chains and bracelets worn every day.
  • 14K — 58.3% pure gold. The most popular choice in the US: a strong balance of rich color, durability, and price.
  • 18K — 75% pure gold. A deeper, richer yellow and a more premium feel, slightly softer than 14K.

Which Should You Choose?

For pieces that take daily contact — Cuban link chains and bracelets, rings — lower karat means a harder, more scratch-resistant piece. For a richer color and a more luxurious feel, go higher. In yellow, white, or rose, the karat works the same way; only the alloy metals (and the color) change.

All of our gold jewelry is stamped with its karat, and solid — never plated or filled unless clearly stated. Our Cuban links, for example, are solid gold in your choice of 10K, 14K, or 18K.
